Choose Solid Wood Worktops with Tongue-and-Groove Joints

– best for quality, and best for you

Wood is a living material that “works”. The working of the wood places heavy demands on the assembly of a worktop.

The wood staves in a worktop adjust to the surrounding environment and during damp periods the staves will absorb some of the moisture.

The individual staves do not necessarily absorb the same amount of moisture and may therefore expand differently. This means that the worktop may contract or expand in the depth.

For the same reason it is also important that a solid wood worktop is correctly maintained and saturated with oil. Read more in our instructions.

Glue Cracks

To minimize the risk of glue cracks, which are caused by the working of the wood, and to ensure a good stability in the worktop, SPEKVA’s most exclusive product types are always assembled using tongue-and-groove joints in the depth and finger joints in the length of the top.

When the staves are glued together, edge against edge, as is the case with cheap worktops, the wood may work in the entire thickness of the worktop. Using tongue-and-groove joints from SPEKVA, every single stave is securely anchored to each other and only a very small part of the wood will be influenced by the surrounding environment.

The tongue-and-groove joints/the anchoring provide an extra glue surface of between 27 and 40%, depending on the worktop thickness. The tongue-and-groove assembly, in combination with strong and flexible glue, minimizes the risk of glue cracks significantly and the result is a beautiful, lasting worktop.

How do I check if my new worktop is glued or tongue-and-groove joined?

When looking at the end edge of the worktop, you can easily spot whether the top has been glued or tongue-and-groove joined. If the end edge shows a kind of jaggedness or notches, the top is tongue-and-groove joined.

Which of SPEKVA’s product types are delivered tongue-and-groove joined?

All worktops manufactured in the product types Royal, Classic and Standard are always supplied with tongue-and-groove joints only and hand sorted according to SPEKVA’s strict quality requirements.

Also remember that wood is a climate friendly and bactericidal material.
