Colour Maturation – Solid Wood

During the first period of time, solid wood worktops will mature in colour and their surface will become more uniform. Colour maturation will depend on the type of wood, surface treatment and on the impact of light to which the worktop is exposed.

Some types of wood will be very colourful at the beginning with light and dark staves in between each other. Others will be much lighter upon delivery than the product you may have seen in the showroom. Some can be so “fresh” in their colour variations that you begin to doubt if you have received the correct product.  In particular, this is the case for wood types such as Iroko, Wenge and Cherry.

Full maturation may take from eight months up to several years, but the process is further influenced by the impact of sunlight, oxygen, daily use and maintenance (oiling).

This is also why supplementary worktops, which are delivered somewhat later than the first delivery, often vary in colour.
However, the difference will reduce after some time.

Time of delivery

A fresh “newly produced” worktop in Wenge treated with oil natural will look like the photo to the left upon delivery.

6 days after delivery

The photo to the left shows the worktop after only six days and shows how much the worktop has already matured and the surface become more uniform.

5 month after delivery

The photo shows the same Wenge worktop one month after production. The influence of normal daylight has made the worktop surface more uniform. The worktop will continue to colour mature over the next five months and will become more uniform; with respect to Wenge it means darker.
